Buying organic olive oil online: how to choose truly organic

Buying organic olive oil online is the fastest way to get certified organic quality that you rarely find in supermarkets. Look for the green EU organic label, a recent harvest date, and a named producer. Our current top 3 are: Cretan Heritage Krissa Organic, Nobleza del Sur Flor d'Abeja Picual Organic, and the Guglielmi organic duo from Puglia.

In short

Buying organic olive oil online gives you access to certified organic oils with harvest dates, lab data, and producer names — information usually missing from supermarket shelves.

You can recognise truly organic by the green EU leaf and a control number (in the Netherlands: Skal). Without that number, "organic" is just a word on the label.

Why buy organic olive oil online?

The organic section in supermarkets is small and anonymous. You'll find at most two bottles, often a blend of oils from different countries, without a harvest date or producer's name. Those who buy organic olive oil online from a specialist get exactly the information missing from the shelves: which farmer, which variety, which harvest, and which lab values.

We import our organic oils directly from small-scale producers in Greece, Spain, and Italy. Each batch is independently tested for acidity and polyphenols. That's the difference between trusting a quality mark and being able to verify it.

What does 'organic' mean for olive oil?

Organic is a protected term. An olive farmer can only call their oil organic if the entire cultivation complies with the European organic regulation: no synthetic pesticides, no artificial fertilisers, and demonstrable care for soil and biodiversity. Furthermore, the olive grove must undergo a three-year conversion period before the first harvest can be sold as organic.

Control is carried out by recognised bodies. In the Netherlands, this is Skal Biocontrole, the supervisory body that inspects every organic company annually. Every imported organic oil also carries the control number of the certifier in its country of origin.

How to recognise a genuine organic olive oil label?

Look for the green EU leaf (the Euroleaf) on the label, the official organic olive oil label of the European Union. Below it, there is always a code, such as NL-BIO-01 or GR-BIO-01. This code refers to the inspection body and can be requested. If "organic" appears on the bottle but not the Euroleaf with a code, then it is not a certified organic product.

Quality labels like DOP and IGP (Protected Designations of Origin, registered in the official EU register for geographical indications) indicate origin — not organic status. An oil can be IGP without being organic, organic without being IGP, or both simultaneously.

Organic vs. conventional: the honest difference

What do you really get when you choose organic? Here's the comparison without marketing fluff:

Aspect Organic Olive Oil Conventional Olive Oil
Pesticides No synthetic agents allowed Allowed within EU standards
Control Annual audit by certifier (e.g. Skal) Regular food safety control
Soil Management Mandatory attention to soil life and biodiversity No additional requirements
Yield per hectare Lower, thus higher cost price Higher
Taste & Polyphenols Depends on variety and harvest time Depends on variety and harvest time
Price (500 ml, specialist) Approx. €15–€45 Approx. €10–€40

Note the fifth row: taste and polyphenol content depend on the olive variety, harvest time, and pressing — not on the organic certificate itself. An early-harvested conventional Picual can contain more polyphenols than a late-harvested organic oil. That's why we test each batch separately — and that's why it pays to buy organic olive oil online from a seller who includes the lab values.

Is organic olive oil healthier?

Honest answer: not automatically. According to the Netherlands Nutrition Centre, there is no evidence that organic products are more nutritious than conventional ones. However, organic oil demonstrably contains fewer pesticide residues, and that is the main reason many of our customers choose organic. The health value of olive oil lies primarily in the extra virgin itself: according to the standard of the International Olive Council — the intergovernmental organization that establishes global quality standards for olive oil — extra virgin olive oil must contain a maximum of 0.8% free acidity and be free of sensory defects.

Buying organic extra virgin olive oil: 5 purchase criteria

Use this checklist before ordering organic olive oil online:

  • Euroleaf + control number on the label — no code means not organic.
  • Harvest year mentioned — fresh oil (harvest 2025/2026) contains the most flavour and polyphenols.
  • Producer and origin named — one farmer, one region is a good sign; "blend of EU oils" is not.
  • Dark glass or tin — light degrades olive oil.
  • Lab data available — acidity and polyphenol values show the seller has nothing to hide.

Our top 3: order these organic olive oils online

For those buying organic olive oil online for the first time, it's best to choose a bottle with a distinct flavour profile. Here are our three recommendations from this harvest:

1. Cretan Heritage Krissa Organic (€29.90 / 500 ml). Award-winning organic extra virgin olive oil from 100% Tsounati olives, an ancient Cretan variety rarely grown outside Greece. Medium intensity, ideal raw over salads and grilled vegetables.

Tasting note — Cretan Heritage Krissa Organic:

Aroma: freshly cut grass, green apple and a hint of wild herbs

Taste: soft fruity start, then an elegant peppery finish that is not overpowering

Texture: silky, medium body

Best use: salads, fish, young cheeses — anything you finish raw

Our score: 92/100 — the most accessible organic oil in our range

2. Nobleza del Sur Flor d'Abeja Picual Organic — Gift Edition (€42.95 / 500 ml). Robust, early-harvested Picual from Jaén, Andalusia, with high polyphenol content. Delivered in a gift box — equally suitable for your own kitchen or as a gift.

3. Guglielmi Olive Oil Duo: Puglia IGP & Organic Puglia IGP (€49.50 / 2×500 ml). The smartest starting point: the same Italian producer, one conventional and one organic oil side by side. This way, you can taste for yourself what organic does and doesn't change.

Why is organic olive oil more expensive?

Organic olive groves yield fewer kilos of olives per hectare, weed control is mechanical instead of chemical, and annual certification costs money. Expect a €3 to €8 premium per half litre from a specialist. That difference is in the cultivation — not the label.

Where to buy organic olive oil in the Netherlands?

Those looking for organic olive oil online in the Netherlands (or, as more and more people search, "organic olive oil Netherlands") have roughly three channels. The supermarket is cheap but anonymous. The health food store has certified bottles, but rarely harvest dates or lab values. The online specialist combines certification with transparency: producer, harvest, variety, and test results per batch.

At Olijfoliemarkt.nl, you will only find organic oils that we have personally selected from the producer. View the full organic olive oil collection or explore our complete range of extra virgin olive oil if you want to compare organic and conventional.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between organic and regular olive oil?

Organic olive oil comes from groves without synthetic pesticides and artificial fertilisers, annually inspected by a certifier like Skal. Taste and polyphenol content depend on the variety and harvest time, not the certificate.

How do I know if organic olive oil online is truly organic?

Check for the green EU leaf (Euroleaf) plus the control number on the label, for example, NL-BIO-01 or GR-BIO-01. A reputable webshop will display this quality mark with the product and can show the certificate upon request.

Which organic olive oil tastes best?

That depends on your taste preference. If you're looking for soft and fruity, choose the Cretan Krissa Organic. If you like peppery and robust, then the Flor d'Abeja Picual Organic from Andalusia is your oil. Undecided? The Guglielmi duo lets you taste organic and conventional side by side.

How do you best store organic olive oil?

Dark, cool (14–18 °C) and well-sealed — so not next to the stove. Use an opened bottle within two to three months for optimal flavour.

What does the EU organic label on olive oil mean?

The Euro-leaf guarantees that the oil complies with the European organic regulation: organic cultivation, a three-year conversion period and annual inspection by a recognised body. The number below it refers to the certifier.
